Brazilian revenge

An oddity. The matriarch of a Brazilian family vows revenge when her husband and sons are killed. She sends her three daughters to recruit hit men by any means necessary, and the young women gladly jump into snazzy cars and whirl through deserts on their way to remote bars and prisons wearing black pinched-in dresses and high heels.

These scenes are overlayed with images of candles and maps, Adam and Eve, blood and snakes. Characters quote Job, but with real trembling. Back home, Mama Capadocio sews furiously: her will be done. This woman is played by Marieta Severo, famous in Brazil for playing nasty characters in soap operas. A kind of Alexis Colby but with blood pulsing through her veins.

The whole thing has the feel of a demonic soap, and was a hit in Brazil, where Severo, and television soaps in general, are wildly popular - our fondness for EastEnders is louche in comparison. Like I said: odd.
