A new morning

FW Murnau's 1927 silent movie is the story of rural lovers and urban loss - all told in a fluid, rhapsodic way in stylised, expressionistic sets (which didn't go down well with the Hollywood studio that backed the great German director).

The film is electric: overwhelmingly passionate and sexual. The hero falls in a swoon into the arms of his minx, his face disconcertingly extreme (and modern - he's a dead ringer for Terry Hall), sweat flooding his eyes. Unforgettable.
