Braff seems to be saying to us: We're miserable, right? Therefore we gotta be meaningful... To which the answer can only be: well, no, you may only be miserable. Sadness, in and of itself, is no more profound than any other strong emotion. Setting this caveat to one side, I think we can keep an eye on Braff. He cites Woody Allen as a strong influence (he was in Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery), and with his allround talents he could be well placed to step into those large, neurotic shoes.
