Ireland's answer to Billy Connolly

Andrew Maxwell is steadily proving himself to be the Irish Billy Connolly. Before the accusations of blasphemy start flying, let us explain.

Maxwell, like Connolly, is a natural raconteur, telling stories with such a light touch that laughter almost drowns out the fact that the man's finger is firmly on the social and political pulse. And, like the Big Yin, he can make a packed room feel as cosy as his local.

Waxin' revolves around a series of baffling situations Maxwell has found himself in over the past year. He has a track record for monkey business; this time he's almost arrested for 'hetero-swimming' and is receiving texts from the IRA. To explain Maxwell's stories wouldn't do them justice. Like Connolly, much of the amusement lies in his storytelling.

Maxwell's director Paul Byrne again deserves a nod. Left to his own devices, you get the feeling Max would yack forever. Honed to a perfect hour, Maxwell's pure magic.
