Robyn Denny's S5 1960
(Acrylic on canvas, £15,000, anonymous)
Just when I was about to give up my search, I found what I had been looking for. "This would have been £30,000 last year, this year I'd sell it to you for £15,000," said the dealer of a beautiful painting by a British post-war abstractionist. "If the value of your house can drop by 50 per cent, I don't see why all of this stuff shouldn't go the same way," he said, waving at the art around him. Unfortunately, I can't tell you who it was who spoke so candidly, since his last words were "that's off the record", and if I told you what he was called, he would be shunned by the art world — that would be not so much naming and shaming, as naming and maiming. No one should be punished for their honesty, should they?
