A macabre shrine to the Bond girls

As you survey each image, a slight adjustment to focus presents your own innocuous face in a ghoulish double portrait.

The cast list is long, so you can align yourself alongside the defaced image of any number of your fantasy Bond girls. And some are genuinely creepy.

Shirley Eaton's gold-painted features, which already look a bit sinister, present a particularly unpleasant sight: she has a wide, toothless grin and blank eyes but the fact that she has enough of her face left intact to make instant recognition possible is what makes it particularly horrid.

What is nasty about Honour Blackman, meanwhile, are the jagged crenulations of her mouth, making her resemble a frightful grinning hag. The identity of the rest might be more difficult to decipher, though you can tell there's a real art to all this dextrous defacing.

Although Douglas Gordon specialises in the creepy and the uncanny, this predilection rarely spills out into anything as crassly and compellingly horrible as this.

But the images at least express how easily celebrity adoration can turn into an obsession to hurt the thing you desire most.
