A non-executive can never know what is going on in every part of the business and it may well be that, eventually, we will have to concede that some businesses are not too big to fail but too big, in the long term, to succeed. But what non-executives can and must do is to ensure that in their top team they have people of the highest calibre in whom they have complete trust. Without that trust, the non-executives leave themselves and the business in a precarious position.
