McKenzie said: “We are in a double shock — a shock from Covid and a shock from Brexit —and it is extremely difficult for companies to get their heads round this new stuff when all this is going on.”
The ONS data came as a poll of Institute of Directors members found nearly one in five company directors whose firms usually trade with the EU had halted exports and imports in January.
Of those who had stopped trade in January, 48% said it was temporary and 42% said it was permanent.
It remains to be seen whether companies can pick up the slack elsewhere..
