James Blunt's wife Sofia Wellesley in $1 billion court case against Goldman Sachs

Pop star James Blunt’s society wife Sofia Wellesley is likely be called as a witness in a $1 billion (£690 million) court case against Goldman Sachs.

Goldman allegedly wrongly took advantage of naive officials in Libya’s sovereign wealth fund to persuade them to invest $1 billion with the bank, most of which it lost.

Goldman is accused of laying on lavish entertainment for Libyan staff, including “heavy drinking and girls”.

At pre-trial hearing today, Wellesley, who worked for the Libyan Investment Authority in Mayfair, was expected to be named as a witness to appear in the High Court next month.

The descendant of the Duke of Wellington has been quoted as saying the Libyan staff were “a team of clearly naive and unqualified individuals… doing their best in the face of extremely intelligent, ambitious and experienced individuals”.

The bank denies wrongdoing.
