French president Emanuel Macron quickly moved to capitalise on Sunak’s announcement by making French duty free allowances more generous in a bid to win over London tourists.
The Association of International Retail has described the move as “an own goal that will be more damaging to the UK visitor economy than the coronavirus.”
It has pointed out that Britain will be the only country in the developed world to abolish tax-free shopping.
The Treasury has said visitors will be still able to recoup the tax by sending products home by post.
