HSBC said yesterday that it is to shut another 117 branches. Bostock said that Santander has already done its own branch “rationalisation”.
He added: “What people go to a branch for is changing. They don’t go there for basic cash transaction but people still want face-to-face advice.”
Although Santander is the fifth-biggest player in UK banking, it positions itself as a challenger bank to Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS.
Santander performed well in Brazil, where it is the biggest bank. Chairman Ana Botin said today she expects growth in emerging markets to offset a slowdown in the UK and Europe.
The shares, on a stellar run this year, today rose another 20p to 461p.
