Sainsbury’s hits back at Aldi as price war takes toll on tills
Counter: Sainsbury's boss Mike Coupe wants to offset challenging conditions in grocery by growing non-food revenue and masterminded a takeover of Argos
Sainsbury’s blamed food price deflation, which had accelerated slightly in the three months to September 24.
It also posted its first quarterly sales fall in clothing, partly because of unpredictable weather. But sales at Argos, which it formally took over in a £1.4 billion deal three weeks ago, were up 2.3%, it added.
Coupe said conditions would remain tough. “It’s as challenging a market as it has been for a number of years. That dynamic will continue.”
