Monsoon Accessorize owes a total of 1438 workers a combined £104,507.83, according to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Overall, 115 companies in sectors including hairdressing, retail, education, catering and social care neglected to pay £389,000 in wages.

The hairdressing industry was also singled out for a campaign to improve compliance and “drive voluntary behavioural change”.

The minimum wage is currently £6.70 an hour for over 21s. From April next year, that sum will rise to £7.20 for those over 25 under George Osborne’s National Living Wage scheme. It will hit £9 an hour in 2020.

The government has been naming and shaming firms breaking the rules since 2013.

The effort has exposed 400 employers that were in arrears of almost £1.2 million and seen £513,000 in fines imposed.

Business Minister Nick Boles said: “Employers that fail to pay the minimum wage hurt the living standards of the lowest paid and their families.”
