So what did he do?
Costolo's reign did see Periscope and Vine add video to tweets and allow videos to be watched in the app, keeping eyes on the site.
It is also currently building new products that will add functions to the site and is getting rid of the 140 character limit on direct messages in the hope that users will stay put when they want to chat, instead heading straight for its rivals.
Those efforts may not have happened quickly enough to appease investors but Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, who will fill Costolo's shoes until a permanent replacement is found, clearly hopes they will soon bear fruit as he revealed that there will be no change of direction.
