Former Argos boss John Walden revealed as new Yo! Sushi chairman

YO! revealed on Friday that it has appointed former Argos boss John Walden as its chairman.

Walden has worked in the consumer-facing retail sector for over two decades on both sides of the Atlantic.

He headed up Argos between 2012 and 2016, leading through the sale to Sainsbury's, and as Naked Wines chairman oversaw the sale of Majestic Wines. Walden was also executive chairman at Holland & Barratt following its acquisition by LetterOne.

The Japanese fusion food giant - famed for being the first to bring conveyor belt sushi to the UK - said Eric Nicoli, who joined YO! as chairman in 2015 after it was bought by Mayfair Private Equity, is "stepping down to pursue other interests".

Yo! now sees around 75% of its revenues in North America, where the firm's Bento Sushi brand is sold in supermarkets and canteens.

Richard Hodgson, chief executive officer of the YO! group, said: "As we now start to emerge from the pandemic, we see significant opportunities to further progress our multi-channel strategy and I am delighted that John has agreed to join our board as chairman at this time. He brings with him extensive experience from both sides of the Atlantic which will be invaluable as the group moves to the next phase of growth."

He added: "I want to thank Eric for his role in the transformation of the group over the last six years and wish him all the best with his future projects.”

Walden said: “It’s very exciting to be joining the group at this stage in its development. Richard and the team have created a food group like no other, and there is still a lot to play for.

"I am excited about bringing my experience to the board and supporting Richard and the management team as they look to capitalise on this opportunity.”
