Jailed Libor ‘scapegoat’ Tom Hayes tries to crowdfund appeal

Tom Hayes, the former UBS trader serving an 11-year sentence for Libor fixing, has launched a crowdfunding effort to raise £150,000 for an appeal.

His family claims to have fresh evidence that he was made a “scapegoat” and is seeking a review of his case by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which investigates miscarriages of justice.

Hayes received a 14 year sentence in August 2015, but it was later reduced to 11 years on appeal.

In March an appeals court denied a request to review his conviction for conspiring to manipulate Libor rates, a key interest rate on which billions of pounds worth of transactions are based everyday.

On a Fundrazr webpage, the 36-year-old’s supporters said: “Please help Tom’s family to raise money for legal fees for a new appeal.”
