The closures are dominated by small independent and tenanted pubs, down 36% since 2001, while the number of large managed pubs jumped by nearly 50%.
Despite the closures, pubs turnover has remained constant — more than £20 billion — suggesting that survivors have soaked up the custom of those which closed.
The number of jobs in pubs has also risen 6% since 2008.
This has come as larger pubs shift focus to food and need more waiting and kitchen staff.
