Former Bumi boss back with two new mining jobs

The former boss of controversial Indonesian coal miner Bumi has made a return to the London market, three years after the ill-fated venture with financier Nat Rothschild unravelled.

Nick von Schirnding, who ran Bumi for two years, was today unveiled as an independent non-executive director of Jangada Mines.

It claims to own the largest platinum group metals resource in South America and is gearing up for an Alternative Investment Market float this month.

Von Schirnding was also confirmed as the new chairman of Ortac Resources, another miner already on the junior market, this week as part of its restructuring.

The mining executive was caught in the middle of a high-profile spat at Bumi between Rothschild and the influential Bakrie family in Indonesia before it was offloaded for a knockdown $500 million (£387 million).

The company, which became Asia Resource Minerals, was subsequently fined by the FCA for failing to notify shareholders about related party transactions.

The Bumi saga raised concerns about overseas companies with foreign owners listing in London.
