City Airport’s ‘Liquid in’ security scanners have already shaved a decade off combined queue times

London City Airport’s ‘liquid in’ security scanners cut queue lengths in half in their first year of action, saving over a decade of queuing time, new figures show.

The new scanners, brought in a year ago this week, allow flyers to bring liquids of up to two litres in their carry-on bags, and keep both bottles and laptops in their bags as they are scanned.

Now the Docklands hub has revealed that security queue lengths have halved to an average three and a half minutes over the scanners’ first year in action. Across the airport’s millions of annual outbound travellers, that adds up to more than ten years shaved off of cumulative queueing time.

The airport, still most frequently associated with business travellers, has upped its focus on flights to holiday destinations of  late, following the slower post-pandemic rebound for travel to meetings and conferences. The organisation says that  more than half of its passengers are now travelling for leisure, and is resuming summer flights to popular holiday destinations like the Greek islands of Mykonos and Skiathos.

The scanners are set to be rolled out across the UK, but their nationwide launch has been repeatedly delayed
