BT said that it now aimed to reach 96% of British homes with superfast broadband, exceeding the Government’s target of 95% of homes.
At the same time, BT undertakes that it will deliver a new universal standard for broadband under which every property gets a broadband speed of between 5Mb/s to 10 Mb/s, making it possible to watch video services like You Tube in high definition.
Ultrafast broadband, with speeds of 300 Mb/s to 500 Mb/s will be available to 10 million homes by the end of 2020.
Responding to growing criticism of service levels, the company plans to introduce a new Openreach charter, which would increase on-time installations beyond Ofcom’s minimum standards.
A “View My Engineer” smartphone app, which goes live in a few weeks, will allow customers to track exactly what is happening with their broadband installation.
