Staley was considered for the Barclays CEO role in 2012 but lost out to Jenkins.
“Replacing Diamond with Staley would have been toxic at the time but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then,” Wheeler said.
Barclays’ investment bank has underperformed its US peers over the past few years with a much lower return on equity but the appointment of Staley has encouraged analysts about the future direction of the bank.
“The investment bank will remain a material focus for Barclays,” Investec bank analyst Ian Gordon said. “It’s still a significant business.”
