When he wrote the first edition of The Flat White Economy* (in deference to the industrial amounts of coffee drunk by those working in the tech business), the sector had already overtaken North Sea oil and the motor industry in its importance to the UK economy. By the end of 2013, with data updated for the second edition, it had overtaken the retail, financial and wholesale sectors to become the second-largest segment of the UK economy, with only construction bigger outside the public sector.
