Obviously, however, it is not something that concerns our Government. Indeed, the Chancellor seems to see no limit to what is an acceptable level of economic engagement with China — to the extent that he may even offer the Chinese a virtual free hand to build a nuclear power station to their own design with their own construction teams and their own finance in Essex.
Being dependent on another country for energy can be extremely uncomfortable as Ukraine has found periodically when Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned off the flow of gas.
If the Chinese are to have their own-design plant in Essex, we must hope our relations with that country never turn sour.
We should also remember that when a very small person gets into a rowing boat with someone very large, it is the small guy who gets tipped into the water when the big guy decides to move.
To my knowledge, that is not a Chinese proverb — but it might yet become one.
