About 10 years ago, Madoc Batcup, whose Welsh name belies the fact he works as a financial consultant in the City, wrote a book, Why Companies Need Democracy As Much As Countries, in which he argued that if capitalism versus communism defined the last century, the issue for the 21st century was capitalism versus democracy.
Again, the core argument echoes the words above: companies have grown to a size where they have huge power and influence over people’s lives — far more so in many cases than the politicians in national and local government — but there is no mechanism of democratic accountability through which those affected can say what they think about it.
In a world where companies such as Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook are bigger than most governments, that is neither a happy nor a sustainable state of affairs.
