Aberdeen chief sends warning on Scots vote

The boss of Aberdeen Asset Management today issued a warning to Westminster politicians following Scotland’s decision to reject independence this month.

“I think it was probably the right result,” said Martin Gilbert, who during the campaign did not disclose who he would be voting for, instead claiming Scotland would prosper whatever the outcome.

However, he added: “It’s now up to politicians to deliver on their promises.

“They’d be making a mistake if they thought a ‘No’ vote was for the union.

“It was a vote for change.”

Aberdeen, which controls £331.2 billion, said today net outflows fell to £1.7 billion in the three months ending August 31, compared with £8.8 billion in the previous quarter.

In recent months, investors have withdrawn money from the fund manager amid fears over the health of Asia’s economies, where Aberdeen has a large presence.

It diversified its operations in May by buying a chunk of Scottish Widows for £550 million.

The firm was one of the biggest Footsie risers today, with the shares climbing 8.2p to 407p.

The company’s shares have been performing sluggishly since the start of the year.
